This sounds like a good move, but let’s hope the software vendor who just lost this $18 million contract is from out of state, yes?
Anyway, the governor probably saved the Labor Department and business end-users from a mess of transition headaches. Software projects are ugly (and don’t ask me how I know).

As if…
Heh, they say this like they actually knew or something.
…while economists predict the worst is over and recovery is on the horizon in 2010, no real job growth is expected for at least another year.
“It won’t feel like a recovery until there’s job growth, which won’t happen until 2011,” said Patrick Barkey, director of the [...]
Failure to Plan
Okay so this story is from Sunday but hey, I’ve been busy. It seems Ravalli County has been especially hard-hit by the housing crash. Meaning, they had a helluva housing bubble going on until 2007.
The county planning department received just eight subdivision requests last year for a total of 56 lots on 81 acres. Compare [...]
Missoula, Gutshot
WELL I said this was the end, but no, really this is the end. The Merc-Bon-Macy’s closing? And tonight KPAX reported that Sportsman’s Surplus is closing - because of the economy, or because Terry Brady doesn’t have a successor willing to take on his business empire? (Or both?)
You couldn’t pick two more “anchor” stores to [...]
Subdivision 4 Sale
Where better to find one than on craigslist?
Hmmm, looks like it’s just west of the Wye by Jellystone RV Park. It’s along Interstate 90 and adjacent to the Gallatin Estates development approved by the County Commissioners just last April.
Ah, here it is: O’Keefe Ranch Estates, approved back in the heady days of 2005. [...]
And Then There Was One
Well this is the bloody end. Smurfit-Stone in Frenchtown is shutting down.
Smurfit-Stone Container Corp. announced on Monday the permanent closure of its linerboard plant in Frenchtown, effective Dec. 31. (Frenchtown is about 15 miles west of Missoula.)
The news came as a shock to the mill’s 417 workers – all of whom will lose their [...]
Verde Condos DOA?
We revisit a condo conversion on West Pine, formerly the Highland Apartments. Shown here in January 2008. The work seemed to go on for a year, then the units came on the market at just the wrong time. I revisited in October 2008. Now they are for sale by owner and no longer show [...]
The Late, Great Japan, Inc.
Sound familiar?
…Japan, Inc. didn’t recover. Instead, it went into a long, drawn-out recession that lasted year after year…with on-again, off again deflation…and several stock market rallies. Each time stocks rallied, they fell again. Each time the economy began to grow…along came another setback. This continued for the next 20 years…until March of this year…when Tokyo [...]

Legalize-and-tax-pot initiatives in California.
SAN FRANCISCO — Pot advocates are starting their push to get a marijuana legalization measure on California’s 2010 ballot with support from a prominent state politician.
Former state Senate president Don Perata is set to join organizers of the Tax Cannabis 2010 campaign Friday to launch signature-gathering for the [...]
“Robbing Peter to pay Goldman Sachs”
Matt Welch is on fire. (Hat tip Electric City.)
While the commentariat’s condescension is almost comical, the whole evil-or-stupid explanation misses the elephant in Obama’s room: Americans of all stripes, it turns out, aren’t very keen about the government barging into their lives…
This isn’t about liberal or conservative, Democrat or Republican. A majority oppose Obama’s policies [...]
